Jan's philosophy of yoga:

Janet’s style is firmly rooted in the belief that you can be better than you are right now, with only with a teeny bit of self determination, a willingness to try anything and a drop of yoga.

Though she would be the first to admit that she is the most unlikely yogini,  she wasn’t naturally flexible and never was that girl at school who could do handstands, but she came to yoga to deal with injuries sustained from years of extreme sports and a debilitating car accident. Not only did she find relief from chronic pain, but also a new way to clear her busy mind and feel good again.

She tries to make her classes focused on educating yourself about your body, not as an instructor- but as teacher- but one who maybe knows just a little more than you and is willing to walk down the path of further discovery with you. If you can take just a small 5-minute part of what you did in class and make it a home practice, then her work here is done!

Jan’s teachers in her own words

"My teachers have been many and I have been influenced by Rameen Peyrow of the Sattva school in Alberta, Canada and his brother Afsheen, who literally cradled me when I discovered the challenge and power of Mysore & Ashtanga yoga. Then I flirted with Hatha Vinyasa flow, Iyengar and Hot yoga styles. Eventually to seek training with Cain Carroll at Silicon Valley based teacher, who was inspired to share what his incisive, technical mind had discovered, after years of martial arts training had caught up with him and forced him to find ways to heal his injuries from within. His knowledge of Qi-gong, martial arts and hatha yoga- studied directly after apprenticing with Indian sages and Chinese Taoist Masters, was a revelation to me considering how much yoga I had practiced until then. It was like I’d found the missing piece of the puzzle, in terms of my own body challenges.

I’ve since gone on to seek tutelage Yin and Restorative yoga styles under teachers: Carol Hutchinson- arguably one of Canada’s most well regarded Orthopaedic Surgeons, who also teaches yoga in between doing rounds with her patients- what she doesn’t know about bones and joints isn’t worth knowing….. Gord Desaulets- who in a previous life had a busy city law practice, but pursued yoga teaching after he discovered a talent for melding Yin styles with more active Yang styles to help quiet and balance busy minds and bodies. Alan Mileham- who started out as a fitness instructor after having a successful career as a varsity athlete , but fell in love with yoga, especially Yin yoga as he found it improved his running and golfing performance. He’s also studied extensively with the founders of Yin yoga movement, Bernie Clark and Paul Grilley in Vancouver. Lastly, but not least, Tanis Fishman, a one-woman powerhouse and modern day sage- her compassion and research skills, bring together knowledge of ancient texts and modern neuroscience, to give insights into the human condition. Which has culminated in a powerful Yoga Nidra (‘yogic nap’) practice. Teachers & colleagues- I am grateful to you all. Namaste".
